Ted Gilien, Artist

Ted and his son Jeremy in front of a painting consigned for the movie Spartacus

Welcome to artist Ted Gilien’s page which is hosted on the back page of another page….so please ignore the other content!

This page is under construction and its intentions are several: 1. to find owners of Ted’s work as much of it has been auctioned off or is owned, we assume, by surviving family members of the original purchasers from decades in the past, 2. to find original works featured in his book The Price which he wrote following his experiences as a military officer sketch artist in the aftermath of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The book is being turned into a short art film.

We hope that connecting to owners of the art and the film project will increase the value of Ted Gilien’s work.

Inspired by Hiroshima and Nagasaki

This is an unpolished segment of the work in process of the art film based on Ted’s book The Price, which spoke of the cost of war, the inhumanity of nuclear bombs and hope for  a spring where “sword shall be beaten into plowshares, and spears into pruning hooks”. I, (Steve Kassel), was moved in the early 1980’s to make a short film of the book, but had to give up the project. The only part that was done at the time was actor Ed Asner’s narration. That recording went missing and was found two years ago, then transferred to digital and inspired me to resume the project. Finding the original artwork, much of it in color, has been difficult and I am hoping this webpage will bring owners of these pieces forward so that they can be photographed and included in the film.  PLEASE NOTE: This short exerpt’s audio needs to be “sweetened” for fuller sound and that that artwork in this rough cut sample will be replaced.
